Kaiser Wilhelm Gedächtniskirche and Museum Insel

A little Berlin touring this weekend.

Kaiser Wilhelm Gedächtniskirche  (Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church)

Built in 1895, destroyed in 1943 bombing, but the damaged spire and the vestibule which survived are preserved as a memorial. The outside is currently under restoration, and the scaffolding is covered with these panels which make it look like a modern office building, though the broken spire is sticking out of the top.

Mosaics on the walls and ceiling of the vestibule,

Marble statue of Christ which stood on the main altar and survived mostly intact.

Wittenbergplatz U-Bahn station (1902), one of the oldest and loveliest stations in the city.

Alte Nationalgalerie.

Market Gate from Miletus (2nd century AD), Pergamon Museum.

Model of Miletus, with the gate at the upper middle.

Ishtar Gate (Babylon, 575 BC), Pergamon Museum.

Dedication inscription on the gate (described in next photo).

Lions from the Processional Way which ran up to the gate.

Der Große Stechlinsee

We took the train and bus to Furstenberg (Havel) - about two hours travel time - and then bicycled the 9km to the village of Neuglobsow, which is on the lake.

The writer Theodore Fontane spent a lot of time here, and this is a stanza from his poem "Good Advice" that was painted on the wall at the aptly-named Gaststätte und Pension Fontanehaus. "On a summer morning/Take out your walking staff,/Your troubles will disperse/Like the fog."
